Pesem je ena najbolj znanih pesmi nemškega delavskega gibanja. Nastala je ob koncu leta 1934 na prošnjo Erwina Piscatorja za prvo internacionalno glasbeno olimpijado. Besedilo je napisal Bertolt Brecht, melodijo Hanns Eisler. Pesem tematizira Brechotvo prepričanje, da ima samo enotna/združena fronta komunistov, socialdemokratov in delavstva možnost nekaj doseči napram nacionalsocializmu. Pesem je bilo prvič slišati leta 1935 na glasbeni olimpijadi v Straßburgu. Zapelo jo je 3000 pevcev delavcev (Arbeitersängern). Natisnjena na papirju se je prvič pojavila dve leti kasneje, med špansko državljansko vojno v Madridu kot Lied von der Einheitsfront. Melodija je, za razliko od drugih Eislerjevih kompozicij, enostavna, zato, da so jo brez večjih problemov lahko prepevali tudi glasebno neizobraženi ljudje.
