Eugène Edine Pottier, član pariške komune, je napisal besedilo, glasba pa je delo belgijskega mizarja, Pierra De Geyter. Čeprav ima pesem razgibano preteklost – nekaj časa je bila himna Sovjetske zveze, je že vse od svojih nastankov predvsem prva pesem delavcev vsega sveta.
